Abstract:
An algal strain sampled from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, was isolated via vinyl acetate-ethylene emulsion and deposited at the Freshwater Algae Culture Collection at the Institute of Hydrobiology (FACHB-2245). The solitary spherical or ellipsoidal cells had a large vacuole, reddish globule, crystalline structure, and some refractile granules. The cells possessed one to several greenish parietal chloroplasts with a bulging pyrenoid. Based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence, the strain was identified as eustigmatophycean species
Vacuoliviride crystalliferum Nakayama, Nakamura, Yokoyama, Shiratori, Inouye & Ishida. The species is considered as a new record of the genus and species in China. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that the strains of
V. crystalliferum were clustered with
Goniochloris Geitler,
Trachydiscus Ettl, and
Pseudostaurastrum Chodat.
