A newly recorded species of Orchidaceae in mainland China, Zeuxine boninensis var. actinomorpha T. Yukawa, and its “Peloria” type

  • A rare orchid belonging to Zeuxine (Orchidaceae) was discovered in the proposed Southwest Karst National Park, Guangxi section, and examined to clarify its taxonomic identity. Morphological characteristics were documented through field observation, detailed floral dissection, and photographic analysis, and were compared with published descriptions and herbarium specimens of known Zeuxine taxa. Based on these analyses, the plant was identified as Z. boninensis var. actinomorpha T. Yukawa, representing a new record for mainland China. This taxon is distinguished by peloric floral morphology, characterized by a minimally specialized labellum. This record constitutes the first documented occurrence of such a floral symmetry anomaly in Zeuxine. The discovery of Z. boninensis var. actinomorpha expands the known distribution of this taxon, enriches orchid diversity records for the proposed Southwest Karst National Park, and provides valuable material for research on Orchidaceae floristics and peloric flower development in mainland China.
