  • The relationship between cell growth and jatrorrhizine accumulation during the suspension culture of Berberis julianae Schneid cells was reported. In the B.julianae cell suspension culture the cell growth(dry weight per liter)increased gradually and reached a maximum in 16th day. The alkaloid content of the ceils increased nearly in parallel with cell growth curve, and reached a maximum in 19th day, and then tended to decrease. The cell growth rate (g/l/day) and alkaloid formation rate (mg/l/day) in suspension cuhurc of B.julianae cells are little difference. The rate of cell growth is quicker than that of alkaloid formation. The peak pattern of cell growth rate is sharper, it reached to peak on 12th day. The rate of alkaloid formation increased slowly and reached to peak on 16th day, it's peak form is showed much gently. When the cell growth decreased or ceased, the alkaloid formation is still proceeding. So that the time to peak of alkaloid formation rate is delayed 4 days. Based on the sugar consumption and cell growth the percentage of sucrose conversion was calculated by 59%.
